Review: The Derby Arms, Epsom

A Top Surrey Pub for Gastropub Dining

The newly renovated Derby Arms in Epsom has quickly cemented itself as a prime spot for gastropub dining in Surrey. Set against the scenic backdrop of the Epsom Downs, this stylish pub has combined a warm and inviting atmosphere with a contemporary menu that caters to all tastes – from casual diners to foodies in search of the best gastropubs in Surrey.

Food & Drink Highlights

Our meal at The Derby Arms began with an assortment of sharing starters: gooey raclette, padron peppers, and crispy salt and pepper squid. Each dish was delicious, with the raclette being a true standout – rich and satisfying with fresh bread for dipping. Moving to mains, we opted for the pork belly paired with scallops, and the seabass, served with a Bouillabaisse sauce, green beans, and new potatoes. Both dishes were well prepared; the pork belly was tender and full of flavour, while the seabass brought a taste of the Mediterranean with its bold, fragrant sauce.

No meal here would be complete without dessert, so we indulged in the decadent chocolate bombe and classic sticky toffee pudding. The chocolate bombe was a crowd-pleaser, while the sticky toffee pudding was rich and comforting, making for the perfect end to a fab meal. Although we couldn’t fully explore the wine list or cocktail menu as we were driving, what we sampled hinted at a carefully curated drinks selection that we’d love to revisit.

Ambience & Atmosphere

The Derby Arms combines traditional charm with a modern, sophisticated twist. Indoors, cosy corners and rustic decor create a welcoming vibe, while outside, the festoon lights add a warm, enchanting glow – ideal for evening gatherings. There’s even a semi-private dining room, perfect for group celebrations. For families, the menu includes a great range of kid-friendly options, from burgers to pizzas.

Service & Value

The service was attentive throughout, with staff quick to answer questions and make us feel at home. Although prices aren’t cheap – expect around £50 per head for two courses with drinks – The Derby Arms offers a dining experience that is a great option when meeting with friends or for evenings when you don’t want to cook. After a brisk walk on the nearby Epsom Downs, a hearty meal here hits just the right spot.
