What we thought

Situated at the foot of Box Hill in Surrey, 51 Degrees North is a cafe and restaurant which we urge you try even if you’re not in the area. It’s got a fantastic menu at any time of day - that goes beyond the bog standard brunch/breakfast and lunch offering that you’ll often see at a village cafe or pub. 

Inside, you’ll find a bright and airy space with the counter to your right. You order there and then take your number to a table. It has the usual pastries on the counter to go alongside any coffee or tea you choose, but the breakfast/brunch options are great - with eggs on toast, pancakes and more on offer. Importantly, they are ALL delicious too. 

For lunch, you can pick a sandwich or salad, but we had heard good things about its curry and Korean chicken. We happily scoffed those down when we tried 51 Degrees North on a wet and windy day and the prospect of a walk up Box Hill didn’t excite us. All main dishes are reasonably priced - though understandably cost a bit more than your average sandwich lunch. 

Other things that set this place apart and means we’ll return again was the service and also the small shop selling homewares too. Everything on its shelves was chic and stylish - so a great place to head when you’re struggling to buy something for that hard to buy person in your life. Throughout our meal, we appreciated the attention to detail in presentation and service. The staff were attentive, and the dishes were well-prepared.

Overall, then, our experience at 51 Degrees North was excellent. The food was delicious, the service was great, and the atmosphere was welcoming. Whether you're in need of a hot drink at the end of a walk or cycle, or want something that little bit more substantial, definitely stop in.
