EXPLORING SURREY'S WINE: A DEEP DIVE INTO THE VINEYARDS OF THE COUNTY

Surrey, often overshadowed by its neighbouring wine regions in Hampshire and Kent, is quietly emerging as a powerhouse in the world of English wine.

With an ever warming climate, hilly valleys, diverse terroir, and passionate winemakers, Surrey has become a hotbed for producing exceptional wines that rival those from more traditional wine-growing countries such as France. In fact, many French wineries are investing in English wine, given that its climate is only going to get warmer.

At Ashtead Living, we are big lovers of wine, so we wanted to take a closer look at the vineyards of Surrey and explore why this county is gaining recognition as a top destination for wine enthusiasts.

THE RISE OF SURREY'S VINEYARDS

Traditionally known for its picturesque landscapes and historic charm, Surrey's transition into a wine-producing region might come as a surprise to some. However, the countyis increasingly enjoying warmer summers and plus it has chalky soils, so provides the perfect conditions for grape cultivation.

As a result, Surrey has seen a surge in vineyard plantings over the past few decades, with passionate viticulturists embracing the challenge of producing world-class wines in what would have once been seen as unlikely setting.

SO, WHY SURREY?

But why is Surrey such a good place for making wine?  Surrey's chalky soils, similar to those found in Champagne, provide excellent drainage and impart distinct mineral qualities to the wines. Additionally, the county's proximity to the coast moderates temperatures, creating a microclimate ideal for grape cultivation. As a result, Surrey's vineyards can successfully grow a wide range of grape varieties, from classic Champagne grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to aromatic varieties like Bacchus and Seyval Blanc.

Plus, advancements in viticulture techniques and a growing emphasis on sustainability have contributed to Surrey's success as a wine-producing region. From organic farming practices to biodynamic principles, Surrey's winemakers are dedicated to preserving the land for future generations while producing wines of unparalleled quality.

THE RESURGENCE OF ENGLISH WINE

English wine, once dismissed as a novelty, is now gaining respect and recognition on the global stage. With its unique terroir, commitment to quality, and innovative spirit, England's wine industry is experiencing a renaissance. Surrey, with its burgeoning vineyards and award-winning wines, is at the forefront of this movement, proving that great wine can indeed be made on English soil.
