What we thought oF Starling BISTRO ESHER

Based at one end of Esher high street, the newly opened Starling Bistro is a fantastic addition to the local dining scene – the kind of spot you’ll want to mark for special occasions or a “treat yourself” moment. Opened by Nick Beardshaw, a familiar face from Great British Menu, the bistro features two of his signature, show-winning dishes: a delicate scallop in Thai green curry and a jaw-dropping raspberry cheesecake and chocolate torte reimagined in the style of Banksy’s Balloon Girl.

Our visit was a real treat, made even more memorable by sitting at the bar, which offered front-row seats to Beardshaw’s kitchen. We kicked things off with a selection of small plates – crumpets topped with truffle and parmesan, alongside a honey-glazed chicken nugget paired with a house hot sauce that balanced both sweetness and heat. Each one were so delicious and a great indicator of what we had in store.

For starters, we had the cod cheek with warm tartare sauce which melted in the mouth, while the scallop dish was an absolute standout: subtly spiced, beautifully plated, and full of bright, aromatic flavours. The mains did not disappoint either. We shared a ribeye steak with triple-cooked chips – crisped to perfection – and a side of garlic-roasted hispi cabbage, bringing a deliciously smoky note. We also had the duck with cherry ketchup, which we couldn’t fault. We shared Beardshaw’s Banksy-inspired dessert to finish, which somehow tasted as incredible as it looked. Not to be overlooked, the wine list at Starlings pairs well with the dishes and certainly added a touch of indulgence to our evening.

And, while the food and drink were show-stopping, it was the impeccable service that really made the experience. From the warm welcome to the attentive care of maitre’d James – who deserves a special shoutout – we felt like the evening was tailor-made for us.

With its chic, luxurious yet relaxed vibe, Starling manages to feel both upscale and inviting – ideal for a celebratory night out. Prices reflect the quality and creativity on offer, making it a worthy splurge. For those looking for a taste of Beardshaw’s talents at a more accessible price, the lunchtime set menu offers a great value at £25 per person. 

If you’re looking for a culinary experience that feels as polished as it does personable, Starling Bistro is a gem not to be missed.
