What we thought

As an Ashtead cafe stalwart, we thought it only right that we go along and try it out  to see what it’s currently offering - and if it continues to be a great place for coffee and cake. 

The Ashtead Living verdict is in: it absolutely is. 

We were so relieved as it means the cafe not only looks chic, it’s also a wonderful spot to catch up with friends, take kids after school and simply eat delicious food. The menu is far more extensive than the coffee shop exterior belies. Breakfasts are where the cafe really shines, with yummy dishes such as eggs benedict on offer alongside the Instragram favourite of smashed avocado and poached eggs on sourdough. Kids are well catered for here too, with under 12s eligible for the Little Appetites menu - all dishes are £6.95 and also served with a cookie or gingerbread man and a carton of juice. 

Its lunch menu is equally appetizing, with another Little Appetites menu at £6.95 too. You’ll find basics such as jacket potatoes with a variety of toppings, plus paninis and baguettes, plus a heavenly fish finger sandwich. 

But if you don’t want a full-on meal, Handleys does its basics well too. It offers delicious coffee and and a homemade blended tea, plus plenty of delectable pastries and cakes on its counter every day. So, while there is no shortage of yumminess on offer,do  get there early to ensure you get your pick of it all. Items like croissants tend to go after the first rush of clients from F45 have finished their first class. We tried the pain au chocolat (which was wonderfully fresh), the millionaires shortbread which was divine, and had a latte and flat white - both of which tasted great too.

What we didn’t love

The outdoor space is at the front, on the road. It’s great for people-watching, but can get a little loud.
